Overview

  • Duration:5 days 4 nights
  • Travelers:6 - 14 guests
  • Meeting Point:Wudang Mountain
  • Dissolution Location:Wudang Mountain
At Christmas, step away from the identical countdowns of every shopping mall and place yourself on a Taoist mountain in the first hours of a winter morning. This 5-day, 4-night winter pilgrimage blends the stillness of a thousand-year-old mountain of palaces with a climb to the summit before dawn. With a cultural historian you will enter the Wulong Palace ruins, a Tang-dynasty foundation still under excavation and closed to ordinary visitors; learn one Wudang taiji form where softness overcomes hardness; and reach the 1,612m Golden Summit before the Christmas sun rises.

From the Curator (Tommy's Note): "I designed this Christmas route to offer you a quiet Christmas, one unlike any other. This journey is both a slow rest in the mountains that lets body and mind settle, and an encounter between a Western festival and an Eastern sacred mountain."

Frequently asked questions

Is the sunrise climb compulsory?

No. The pre-dawn start is optional - whoever prefers to sleep stays at the guesthouse and rejoins the group at breakfast, and the rest of the day runs as planned. Your leader confirms the departure time the evening before, based on the actual sunrise.

How hard is the walking?

Light. The only sustained climb is the pre-dawn ascent to the Golden Summit, on stone steps with a cable car down; the Caishen Trail is about 7km on wide, gently graded bluestone. No trekking experience needed - a pair of shoes you can walk stairs in is enough.

What is the weather like in late December, and what should I bring?

Cold and mostly clear, with snow possible on the upper mountain; the summit runs about 5°C colder than the town, and sunrise comes late at this time of year. Bring layers, a windproof shell, gloves, a warm hat.
