In my ten years of guiding international travelers across China, the biggest culture shock my guests face isn’t the language barrier or the exotic food—it is China’s incredibly advanced cash-free society. This country has skipped the credit card era entirely and moved straight into a smartphone-driven ecosystem. If you land here expecting to tap your physical Visa or Mastercard at a local noodle shop, you will find yourself in a very awkward position. Preparing your smartphone before you arrive is the absolute key to a smooth journey.

The most important step is setting up your digital wallet. Today, both Alipay and WeChat Pay allow international tourists to link their foreign credit cards directly to the app. I always advise my guests to download Alipay at least a week before their departure, complete the real-name identity verification using their passport, and link their cards. Once set up, you can scan QR codes to pay for everything from a 3-yuan bottle of water at a convenience store to a meal at a high-end restaurant. It completely levels the playing field and lets you explore like a local.

Next, let’s talk about internet access and the Great Firewall. Many first-time visitors mistakenly think they can just rely on hotel Wi-Fi and free public networks. However, to access Western platforms like Google Maps, Instagram, or WhatsApp, you need a reliable workaround. I highly recommend purchasing an international roaming plan from your home carrier or buying a travel eSIM before you land. These digital data plans naturally route through international servers, automatically bypassing the local firewalls without requiring you to fiddle with unstable VPN applications.

Finally, fill your phone with a few lifesaver applications. While Google Translate is excellent, make sure to download the offline Chinese language pack before you fly, as cellular signals can drop in remote regions. For navigation, Apple Maps works surprisingly well within China and displays English street names accurately. Don’t let the technology scare you. With a little bit of advance preparation, China’s digital infrastructure stops being a barrier and becomes the ultimate tool that makes your travel safer and more convenient than ever before.

Many people think that exploring Chinese culture means memorizing long lists of imperial dynasties, standing in massive queues at historic monuments, or listening to a guide recite textbook descriptions. I completely disagree. To me, culture is not a dead object trapped behind a museum glass case; it is a living, breathing reality that you can touch, smell, and feel.

The real warmth of history is hidden deep within the architectural framework of ancient courtyards and the hands of master artisans. Last winter, I traveled to a small village known for its traditional heritage crafts. I sat down with an elderly craftsman whose family has been making traditional fish lanterns for generations. As he taught me how to bend the bamboo strips and shape the delicate paper, I felt a direct line of connection stretching back hundreds of years.

That experience wasn’t a staged performance for tourists; it was a genuine exchange of human spirit. When you try your hand at these traditional crafts, or when you trace your fingers along the intricate brick carvings of an old alleyway, you begin to understand the values, patience, and philosophy that shape the Chinese way of life.

I believe that the best journeys leave you with a deeper understanding of the world, not just a camera roll full of standard postcards. By steering clear of superficial check-ins and stepping directly into the living spaces of history, we unlock the true, multi-dimensional story of the East.

There is a unique kind of magic in China’s wild places, especially when you head west toward the snow-capped peaks and vast alpine meadows. Over the years, I have stood by pristine glacial lakes and walked along remote mountain ridgelines where the air is thin but the spirit runs incredibly free. But as a long-time hiker, I also know that nature demands respect, especially when you push past 3,000 meters above sea level.

For me, designing a nature route is never about chasing adrenaline or forcing people to test their physical limits on dangerous cliffs. It is about creating a profound, safe connection with the earth. High-altitude sickness does not care how athletic you are; it only cares about how fast you climb. That is why a safe itinerary must always prioritize a gradual, stepped ascent, giving your body the vital time it needs to adapt naturally.

When my team and I scout these remote wilderness trails, we look for two things: jaw-dropping, untouched scenery and bulletproof safety logistics. On the trail, we never compromise. We always travel with portable medical oxygen, real-time oximeters, and comprehensive medical kits. More importantly, we walk at a pace that allows you to breathe, look around, and let the sheer serenity of the mountains heal your mind.

Hiking should never feel like a race to a crowded, over-photographed viewpoint. The true romance of trekking lies in the quiet rhythm of your own footsteps on a hidden trail. When you journey into the wild with us, you can leave the logistics and emergency protocols to our ground team, allowing you to focus entirely on the raw beauty of the landscape.

I have spent more than ten years scouting routes across China, and if there is one thing I have learned, it is this: the soul of this country cannot be seen through a tour bus window. The real China is alive in the early morning steam of a local wet market, the laughter of neighbors playing mahjong in a quiet alley, and the pride of an artisan finishing a piece of woodwork.

Whenever I plan a new itinerary, my first step is always to get lost on foot. I remember walking into a fading neighborhood in Western Sichuan last spring, completely away from any tourist maps. I sat on a low wooden stool, drank tea with a local grandfather, and watched the neighborhood wake up slowly. There were no neon signs or polished souvenirs, just the raw, beautiful pulse of daily life. That morning taught me more about Chinese culture than any museum ever could.

To truly connect with this ancient land, you have to slow down. You need to swap the chaotic, checklist-style sightseeing for purposeful walking tours that give you the time to observe and feel. When you walk through the rich, historic textures of old neighborhoods, you are not just a spectator anymore—you become a part of the scenery.

That is exactly why I started Travel With Tommy. I wanted to create a bridge for international travelers to step past the tourist curtain and experience the country exactly as it is: vibrant, unfiltered, and deeply human.
